How time flies…

People always told me that my time abroad would go by really fast and I never really imagined that they were right. I came to Europe 2 months and 20 days ago and it feels like just yesterday I moved into my casa with my madre and was nervous and Spanish was my enemy.I didn’t know Alicante and didn’t know if I would be able to make it home the first night.  Today I speak Spanish, I understand more than I can speak but my madre and I get along really well and she understands me.  I know Alicante, the buses, the university  and the beach  and it’s my home. I have 36 days left in Spain before I come home for Christmas. I have done so much, seen so much and learned so much. Not only do I not know how the time went by so fast, I can’t believe it’s almost time to go home and everything that my life has become.

I’ve made Spanish friends. I’ve to Dublin, Waterford, Venice, Verona, Florence, Rome, Paris, and Valencia. I am going to Seville, London, Amsterdam, Berlin, and Brussels before this semester is over. I learned so much Spanish. I had experiences that changed my life and I will never forget. I made friends from all over the states that I hope I have for a lifetime.  I am so thankful for everything that has happened and that is going to happen. I can’t believe that this is my life.

People think that study abroad is just one long vacation and party… and for some it may be but I’ve been immersed into a culture and I have classes and homework just like every other college student. The difference is first all of  it is in Spanish and second it’s more about learning new things and learning spanish and it actually helps me.  It takes a lot for someone to come here and leave everything you know at home, speak a different language, and if you get sick forget it…its like hell. You live here and you aren’t just a tourist. Tourists have more fun.. no but really living somewhere completely different is hard and it takes a lot of work.

This experience is so much more than anything I’ve said. It’s about growing up and becoming a person that realizes that the world isn’t just the USA and that there are so many different cultures out there. I am learning a language that a third of the US speaks and that something like 30 countries speak. Everything I see and Everything I do can’t be measured in words or photos, it is only the memories that I hold dear that remind me of what it is I have learned and everything I appreciate from home. You come to realize the important things in life and what makes you happy because when you study abroad you are taken away from everything you know and it is a difficult process.

I made this video for some of my classes promoting Alicante and study abroad here. This is just the start but I really like it.
